Scalix Announces Scalix Academic Edition Including Free Email for Students
Scalix Academic Challenge offers $250,000 of Grants for Innovative "Code and Curricula" to Advance Linux Messaging and Collaboration
SAN MATEO, CA — JUNE 21, 2005 — Scalix Corporation, the leading provider of email and calendaring software on Linux, today announced the Scalix Academic Edition, a full-function version of its award winning software that includes free email for students and advanced email and calendaring for faculty and staff. The company also announced the Scalix Academic Challenge, a grant program offering funding and Scalix software worth $250,000 to colleges and universities that develop innovative code and curricula which fosters the advancement of Linux messaging.
The cost and complexity of today's proprietary email systems continue to be a barrier to adoption, often relegating educational institutions to low function email systems for faculty/staff and no email for students. Scalix aims to change this with the Scalix Academic Edition, an affordable, Linux and open systems based alternative to proprietary systems like Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise.
"The education market has always been underserved in the area of advanced email and calendaring", said Julie Hanna Farris, Scalix Founder and Chief Strategy Officer. "Scalix was founded on the belief that email and collaboration should be affordable for everyone. Our goal with Scalix Academic Edition is to make it broadly accessible to schools and students everywhere."
Scalix has seen a surge in demand for its email software from schools around the globe, having been recently selected and deployed at several institutions. Edward Bailey of the University of Florida, Materials Science, said, "Scalix has enabled us to significantly upgrade our email at an education-friendly cost. Free email for students makes Scalix's academic offering even more compelling."
The Scalix Academic Edition consists of Scalix's complete email and calendaring software, including the highly scalable, reliable and secure Scalix email server, full-function Microsoft Outlook support and Scalix Web Access, its critically acclaimed web client. Scalix won the Best Messaging Product award at LinuxWorld in February, 2005, and has received industry acclaim for advancing the level of innovation and functionality of email and calendaring on Linux.
"Educational institutions have been early adopters of Linux and they represent a hotbed of innovation", said Farris. "The Scalix Academic Edition is a natural fit for this market, given their need for advanced email and calendaring and their sophisticated knowledge of Linux."
Scalix is also announcing the Scalix Academic Challenge that provides grants of funding and Scalix software totaling $250,000 to colleges and universities that develop 'code and curricula' that encourages the advancement of Linux messaging.
In addition to providing superior functionality to proprietary email systems, a leading Linux-based email alternative must foster a vibrant user community and a thriving ecosystem of education, training and related technologies. The Scalix Academic Challenge is intended to further these goals.
