Scalix Bolsters Management Team as Company Readies For Next Stage of Growth
Appointment of CEO, CTO and Vice President Product Development adds proven leadership in delivering enterprise solutions and driving rapid growth in early stage companies
SAN MATEO, CA — JUNE 16, 2004 — Scalix Corporation, provider of the industry’s most powerful Linux-based email and calendaring platform, today announced the appointments of three new executives: Glenn Winokur as president and CEO, Don Bradford as VP of Product Development and Dr. Andrew Palay as CTO. They were chosen for their experience in leading companies through periods of rapid growth, success in delivering quality enterprise software, messaging industry expertise and world-class technology design. Julie Hanna Farris, Scalix’s founding CEO in 2002, will remain with the Company and on the Board of Directors, working closely with the new executive team on strategic and operational matters.
Winokur brings a strong track record of driving profitable growth in successful enterprise software companies. Formerly COO of NetIQ, Winokur led the company through a rapid period of growth, from initial product launch to $300 million in annual revenues. Bradford hails from Microsoft, where, as General Manager of MSN Client Services, he managed the Hotmail email and calendaring service, helping to develop it into one of the world’s largest and most successful email and calendaring services in the market today. Palay has been founding technologist and CTO of several startups and was formerly Chief Scientist at Silicon Graphics (SGI).
“Glenn has been a valued advisor to Scalix for the past year,” said Julie Hanna Farris, Scalix’s founder. “His experience overseeing the rapid growth of NetIQ is precisely the kind of executive leadership we need at Scalix at this stage. There is no clearer indicator of how optimistic the board and I are about Scalix’s prospects than by the fact that we have attracted an executive team of this quality. With the addition of Glenn, Don and Andy, Scalix has a solid management team poised to take advantage of the early momentum we have achieved. I look forward to working with them and am extremely excited about Scalix’s potential in the global messaging and Linux markets.”
A 24-year veteran of the software industry, Winokur most recently was chief operating officer at NetIQ, a provider of Microsoft-centric systems and security management systems. He played an instrumental role in helping lead the company, from initial product launch in 1996 to $300 million in annual revenues in 2003. During his tenure, he was responsible for all revenue, customer and partner related activities, including NetIQ’s landmark agreement with Microsoft in 2000, which firmly established the company as the market leader in its category. Prior to NetIQ, he held successful sales and business development executive positions at various enterprise software companies, including Compuware, Frame Technology (now Adobe), Documentum and Ingres (now Computer Associates).
“It was an easy decision for me to join Scalix as CEO,” said Winokur. “The company is at the intersection of two issues critical to IT organizations of all sizes -- Linux and messaging. We believe that the market deserves an industrial strength messaging and calendaring platform for Linux. Scalix has deftly created a product and market strategy that is attracting customers and partners all over the world. Its momentum, product quality, customer orientation and all-star team make Scalix poised for industry leadership, and I’m pleased to join the organization during this important phase.”
Farris said the company’s new vice president of product development, Don Bradford and CTO, Dr. Andrew Palay are plum hires. “I am very pleased to bring people with the industry stature of Don and Andrew to Scalix,” said Farris. “Both are well known in their respective fields and bring their top-notch engineering and technology talent to our customers.”
Don Bradford, vice president of product development, has over 25 years of experience in the design and development of market-leading commercial software, with deep domain experience in large scale, highly reliable electronic messaging systems. Previously, Bradford spent nine years in executive and general management roles at Microsoft, most recently as general manager of MSN Client Services. During his tenure, Bradford managed the Hotmail email and calendaring service and is credited with managing a successful integration of Hotmail after the acquisition by Microsoft. Bradford also founded Microsoft’s Macintosh Internet Team, delivering the Macintosh Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Java products to the market. Earlier in his career, Bradford co-founded White Pine Software and held senior technology and management positions at Xerox, Radius, Claris (ClarisWorks) and Aldus (Persuasion).
Dr. Andrew Palay, chief technology officer, is a founding technologist for several startups, including chief architect and technology officer for myCFO where he pioneered the design, architecture and user interface of myCFO’s financial services online platform. Previously, he was chief scientist at Silicon Graphics using his diverse design and implementation skills in award-winning development tools, dynamic shared libraries and the first commercially available Java development environment. He received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, holds four patents and has published papers in the areas of user interface, information retrieval systems and compilers.
Farris, Scalix’s founding CEO, brought the company from inception in 2002 to early revenue stage. The company recently announced its expansion into Europe, additional venture funding, new customers and global partnerships and the release of Scalix 9.0, its most significant new product release to date.
