Scalix Announces Linux-Based Email and Calendaring Platform for the Large Enterprise
Fully featured, proven technology platform significantly improves the reliability of enterprise email, while cutting total cost of ownership (TCO) by half
SAN MATEO, CA — JULY 28, 2003 — Positioning itself squarely between rising enterprise investment in Linux and the increasing corporate need for robust messaging platforms, Scalix Corporation today announced the availability of its fully-featured email and calendaring platform aimed at enterprise customers who are moving toward Linux. By providing utility-class reliability and scalability at less than half of the total cost of ownership (TCO) of existing solutions, Scalix aims to significantly reduce the pain of managing complex messaging environments.
“Email has become business-critical in companies and should be as reliable and dependable as the telephone,” said Julie Farris, CEO of Scalix and a messaging industry veteran. “Yet CIOs are frequently responding to complaints that email is down, while they watch their support and maintenance costs mount. They are increasingly finding that their underlying email infrastructure is not scaling to meet the rigorous needs of an enterprise-wide deployment and that a utility-class platform is needed.”
Currently in pilot with initial customers, the Scalix platform offers the industry’s most robust compatibility with leading email clients. By leveraging Linux and Open Systems Architecture, Scalix customers avoid technology lock-in and are able to quickly plug Scalix into their existing and future environments.
“Enterprise customers are increasingly concerned with the complexity and total cost of ownership of current messaging solutions, creating a sizeable window of opportunity for robust, open architecture solutions such as Scalix,” said Sara Radicati, CEO of the Radicati Group, a leading enterprise messaging consultancy and market research firm. “With its team of enterprise messaging veterans and proven technology, Scalix has the potential to succeed in this market.”
To minimize the cost and complexity of migration commonly associated with the move to a new email platform, Scalix interoperates seamlessly with existing messaging systems such as Microsoft Exchange, ensuring full compatibility and no end-user down time during migration and co-existence periods. Scalix also prevents end user disruption by assuring that all email clients, such as Microsoft Outlook, run unchanged, eliminating administrative complexity and user retraining costs that typically accompany changes to a company’s email environment.
Scalix reduces a company’s total cost of ownership of its messaging platform both through upfront and ongoing savings. Hardware costs are significantly reduced, allowing customers to consolidate their number of servers. The cost of maintenance and support drops with fewer networks and servers, and a dramatic reduction in complexity.
PROVEN PLATFORM, OPEN ARCHITECTURE
The Scalix platform represents a blend of proven utility-class technology and pioneering messaging innovations. HP OpenMail, which the company has licensed from Hewlett Packard, serves as Scalix's robust enterprise-class foundation. This field-proven technology has been deployed by some of the world's largest and most demanding enterprises over the past decade. The risks normally associated with adopting a new system are significantly reduced due to OpenMail's deployment in enterprise environments supporting over 100,000 users while reporting system availability above 99.99%.
To eliminate customer concerns about technology lock-in, Scalix has innovated a new messaging platform based on Linux, Open Systems Architecture (OSA), Web Services and open source technology. The Scalix solution, which supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux, easily integrates with customers’ existing messaging products and technologies, while providing flexibility to quickly accommodate changing needs over time.
"As enterprise customers continue to expand their deployment of Linux, the introduction of Scalix as a viable Linux-based email and calendaring platform will come as a welcome addition to the growing list of applications available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux," said Deb Woods, director of product management for Red Hat. "Enterprises are standardizing on Red Hat Enterprise Linux due to the reliability, performance and cost advantages Linux has over proprietary operating systems." Red Hat Enterprise Linux is one of the first Linux platforms supported by Scalix.
