Scalix Corporation has been acquired by Xandros, Inc.. The FAQs below will address many of the questions you may have about this change. If you have additional questions, feel free to e-mail us at info scalix.com

Q: Why did Xandros Acquire Scalix?
A:
Scalix and Xandros have had close engineering and executive level working collaboration. So, it was natural to explore the acquisition, given Xandros’ stated desire to build its stack internally and through acquisition. Xandros' acquisition of Scalix is part of its ongoing strategy to enter into the critical enterprise application space, providing corporations and enterprises of all sizes with single vendor support of their diverse and growing IT infrastructure needs ranging from Linux desktops and servers, to cross-platform management tools, and now to a well known Exchange alternative. Combined Xandros and Scalix technologies will provide mission critical e-mail and collaboration solutions with global 24/7 support that can be easily deployed and administered on Xandros, Red Hat, and other Linux platforms by Windows network administrators with no prior Linux experience.

Q: What will happen to the Scalix brand?
A: Scalix products will retain their distinct product name and logo; the brand is widely recognized and associated with enterprise-class, Linux-based messaging and calendaring solutions available on multiple Linux platforms.

Q: Will Xandros continue supporting Scalix on Red Hat and SUSE?
A:
Both the integrated Xandros Server/Scalix solution and the standalone Scalix products – Small Business and Enterprise editions – available for multiple Linux distributions and platforms will remain available. Going forward, a major area of development will be to improve integration with the underlying operating system and management tools for a more streamlined installation and administration experience on all supported OS platforms, utilizing Windows-type skillsets. Xandros is already committed to provide their enhanced applications across a wider range of Linux distributions and other platforms through the Xandros BridgeWays product line.

Q: Will this acquisition result in tighter integration between Xandros and Scalix products?
A: The version of Scalix bundled with Xandros Server is already by far the easiest messaging and calendaring product in the market to deploy and administer today. Xandros will continue to improve and deepen this integration as system administrators and IT managers are looking to leverage the strength of Linux-based solutions and Open Source while relying on a tested, pre-configured and integrated solution stack. Our plan is to provide the same level of integration for other OS’s.

Q: What will happen to the freely available Scalix Community Edition and the Scalix Open Source efforts?
A: With more than 200.000 downloads, Scalix Community Edition has been a huge success in promoting the use of enterprise-class Linux-based messaging and calendaring in organizations of various size. The Scalix community has provided invaluable feedback with huge benefits for all Scalix customers and users. In addition, numerous localization initiatives and product add-ons have launched out of the community. Xandros is committed to continue providing the world's best free e-mail and calendaring solution based on Linux and Open Source, so Scalix Community Edition will remain available on all current platforms. As a strong supporter of Open Source and Open Standards, Xandros will continue publishing the Scalix collaboration platform in source code form and provide a complete environment to support the community with Scalix-related open source projects. The upcoming ScalixForge will be the new home for all OSS-related activities.

Q: How does this acquisition affect existing Scalix customers?
A: The acquisition will provide great benefits to Scalix customers. As a complementary addition to the Xandros product line, Scalix products will continue to be developed in the same or very similar structure, so future versions will appear as seamless upgrades and no migration will be required. Furthermore, customers will benefit from strengthened support and services offerings and rely on a much larger reseller and partner network. Building on the existing availability of Scalix as part of Xandros Server, Xandros will provide a truly integrated messaging and calendaring 'appliance'-type product with unmatched ease of installation and administration. Customers will also benefit from the parent company’s full corporate commitment, and access to its much larger financial and engineering resources and significant new technologies, together with enhanced global 24/7 support.
